Student Grades NOT Affected by Heavy Use of Social Media Sites

-->

Spend hours a day on Facebook or Twitter? Worry not if you’re a student, it will not affect your grades according to a recent study done by the University of New Hampshire. The study broke down users into two groups; “heavy” users that spend over 61 minutes a day on social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn and YouTube, and “light” users that spend less than 31 minutes on these sites a day. Researchers found that 63 percent of heavy users were achieving high grades (A or A and B grades), compared to 65 percent of light users. While 37 percent of heavy users of these websites received what were defined as lower grades (B grades and lower), 35 percent of light users received fell into that same category. University of New Hampshire Professor, Chuck Martin said, “The study indicates that social media is being integrated with rather than interfering with students’ academic lives”. Martin’s marketing class conducted the survey at the university on a total of 1,127 students.
